The Right Bed Frame Support For Your New Mattress Set

You've spent weeks shopping for just the right mattress set at just the right price, and you have finally found the one that is not too firm, not too soft, but just right. That's great news, Goldilocks! Now, it is time to shift your attention to what is under your bed and examine your bed frame.

Often the excitement of getting a new mattress set overshadows the reality that your new mattress requires proper support. You will enjoy a longer comfort life on your new mattress if you make sure it has the right support.

How can you be sure that your new mattress set has the right support?
If your bed frame is metal and it is over 10 years old, make sure there is no squeaking or rattling when you roll over on the bed. Squeaking and rattling may indicate that your bed frame has weakened over time. It is probably a good idea to replace your bed frame if this is the case. Sometimes, mattress stores will give you a free bed frame with your purchase of a mattress set. Usually, this is the cheapest, least supportive bed frame available. You're better off asking for an upgraded deluxe model bed frame and paying for it. These last longer and are more supportive than the "free" ones most stores offer.

If you have a wooden bed frame with wooden slats, make sure the slats are not bowing in the middle. Also, wooden slats are not enough for queen and king size bedding; you need at least one leg to the floor for queen size and two legs for king size. You can make a leg by having a piece of wood cut to the correct length at your local hardware store. Many companies offer metal center support slats that are far superior to wood slats. For the best possible support, choose a metal support designed for use with wood beds.

Following are some guidelines to follow for ensuring the proper support for your new mattress set: You need at least one rigid center support bar with one leg to the floor for queen size bedding and at least two rigid center support bars with legs to the floor for king size. Wood center support slats should be at least 3/4 inch plywood. If yours are not at least 3/4 inch plywood, consider a metal bed slat system like a Strong Arm, Bed Beam, or Bed Bridge support system. Twin and full size beds do not usually require additional center supports, but with the extra heavy weight of today's bedding, it sure wouldn't hurt to add a center support bar. Refer to your mattress manufacturer's warranty card for detailed information about what support is required.

Do it Yourself Modern Style Bed Frame

Perhaps you're tired of the rickety metal frame of your bed and you have no laid funds to buy an expensive new frame. If you want to have a modern style bed without spending too much, you can opt to custom build your own frame at home. All you need are the tools, time and patience to accomplish this project. Whether you want something basic or perhaps with stylish drawers, you can definitely make your own frame at the comfort of your home.

To achieve a modern style bed with drawers you would need the following materials: plenty of high quality wood, bed rail hangers or lag bolts, screws, wood glue and veneered plywood. Measure your mattress and add an inch and a half to your base board's measurement to provide the right space for your drawers. Begin making boxes using four pieces of wood for per box and an additional wood piece for the bottom part of your drawers. The two side pieces should be longer than the wood pieces that would be used for the front and back of the drawers. Attach the pieces together using wood glue or screws for sturdier finish.

Leg Bed Frame

Once you're done with your drawers, create the base of your bed frame where the drawers would be positioned using four pieces of quality wood and an additional wood slab that would go across the middle of the frame. Make sure that the wood pieces of your frame are higher than your drawers. To achieve more space under your bed you can use bed risers. Attach the four pieces of wood together at the end of each piece using bed rail hangers or lag bolts; then, secure the additional wood horizontally at the middle of the frame, consider this as the support beam of your bed.

Create smaller cross sections of wood pieces that are half the size of your main bed frame. These wood slabs would be lined vertically across the inside of your main frame; they will support your drawers along with your mattress. Secure the long wooden slab parallel to your support beam. Then, glue or screw the small pieces of wood across the center wood.

Secure the tracks of your drawers at the cross section of your bed frame. Connect the runners to your drawers, and then insert your drawers to their designated position for testing. After test fitting your drawers, remove them for a while and place the veneered plywood that will support your drawers and mattress. Once you secured your veneered plywood in place, you can paint or decorate your frame including your drawers.

If your paint has already dried out, you can insert the drawers back to their positions and put the mattress on the baseboard. You can now enjoy customized bed with drawers. This project may take some time and effort. However, once you're done building your frame, all the time and effort you spent would surely pay off.

A Look at Japanese Platform Beds

Platform beds, in general, are great for their simple lines, Zen-like low profile, one-mattress compatibility, and wide availability of styles. You can buy a very boxy platform bed with no headboard or footboard, a more contemporary "bow" platform bed with modernist leg systems, a Japanese-style bed with slightly-curved lines reminiscent of the Han dynasty, and hundreds more. You can even get special "tatami mats" made of straw - a Japanese mat for keeping people and objects separated from the floor or, in this case, from the bed frame.

Almost everyone I met assumed that learning how to build a canopy bed is hard and costly. I don't know what it is about this bed that gives it a "costly" look when in fact, making this kind of bed is rather very simple.

If you want the simplest way of building a canopy bed, you might want to consider just making a canopy frame for an existing bed.

It's also very cheap if you are going to use PVC pipes for the frame from which you can hang the fabric. The only thing you have to consider here is if your ceiling is sturdy enough to be able to hold the additional weight.

On the other hand, I personally chose to build a four poster bed with canopy myself using wood. It just conveys elegance to have it built that way.

To have it built this way, you can start to build the makings of a basic bed. You can opt for a double bed, queen or king size bed. Make sure you use wood for the leg part of the bed as this is where the upright of the canopy bed frame will be attached.

Then, you have to decide on the height of the frame so you can buy the appropriate measurement of the wood.

For the materials you use for the frame, I strongly suggest something that is not very heavy but is sturdy enough to support the drapes.

After having all the materials ready, you can build the frame separately. Make sure you have the correct dimensions. To build a canopy frame,you can use simple angle brackets to join the wood at the corners to make sturdier.

After finishing the building the canopy bed frame, you can then attach the the uprights at the leg part of the bed. It is best to have the upright touching the floor.

You can then hang the drapes or netting in a very fashionable way.
